How to support families with resources and communicate data
Families play a crucial role in a student's learning. So it’s also important to support them with necessary resources as well as better communication to help children at home. In this reflection, I’ll answer the following questions:
How to best support families with resources to aid in literacy development.
How to best communicate assessment data results to students and families
Home learning is defined as an activity that a child is asked to complete outside of the school day, either on their own or with an adult. That activity helps children to practice what is learned at school on the one hand and enables families to provide guidance or have an idea on what is going on in the child’s class on the other hand. Also, that is an opportunity for families to stay connected with their children in their learning process. To be able to provide that guidance, families need resources.
Resources are very important as they contribute to maintaining that connection between the student’s home and his school. As it said, learning is a continuous process and valuable resources enhance the process of learning. For example at home, students can continually be working on their reading or writing skills thanks to good writing and reading resources. Once more resources are important as they are the raw materials for home learning. That aspect of learning and teaching needs to be well planned so we can get the expected results. At the beginning of a school year, I’ll plan to get the appropriate reading and writing resources for the families with a specific schedule (flexible). To do that, effective communication comes into the game.
Data are important are they constitute what I can call learning evidence. Getting the evidence to families is a very important and complex process in case the data are not quite good. In any communication process, the way we communicate is very important. An expected information is no longer a surprise whatsoever the information. For example after assessing, families should know the assessment goals before, and the expected time for the data. Then they are aware as they have a clear understanding of the data purpose. The home learning resources should be aligned with the major assessments timeline as well as the expected timeline for data. That communication will be done via emails, regular meetings and via any other official communication channel. The goal is the get all the parties at the same level of communication.
